Storyline

Studio sitcom about three marriages in various states of disrepair. Rob and Cathy have been married for a long time, and it shows. Evan and Fiona's marriage is one big, noisy argument punctuated by even noisier make-up sex. And David and Georgy have just moved in next door to Rob and Cathy - he's in his 60s, she's in her 30s - firmly putting the (younger) cat among the (not very welcoming) pigeons. When things get tricky in these relationships the characters are able to stop the action, explain themselves directly to the audience and start it all up again.

Stop/Start and talk to the camera
12 March 2016 | by Prismark10See all my reviews

Jack Docherty writes and stars in his adaptation of the Radio 4 sitcom, Stop/Start that examines three married couples whose marriages are in various states of disrepair.

Rob and Cathy have been married for some time, the kids have grown up and about to celebrate their anniversary. Rob seems to have grown tired of Cathy.

Evan and Fiona live in a constant state of arguing, tantrums and getting the last word in with short bursts of passion that keeps them together.

David and Georgy are new to the area, David is 30 years older than her who is young and nubile and previously a work colleague of Rob. So when Rob and Georgy meet up, David becomes jealous and Rob becomes besotted with her which causes problems when he makes a speech at his anniversary party.

Conventionally it is a sitcom about tired relationships and jealousy but the action regularly stops as each person turns round to address the camera, hence the title Stop/Start.

This is really an excuse to put some gags in and inexplicably tell the audience what happens next.

Give the number of alleged sitcoms that I sit through stoned faced, I actually found myself laughing here a few times which is always a good sign. There were a few gags and set ups that worked well although I did think whether it would work as a full series if I was not aware that this was a Radio 4 show.

Nigel Havers who has now become prog rock legend Tony Pebble, courtesy of The Life of Brian Pern is game to set himself up as the older man constantly wondering whether his younger wife will cheat on him.
