This claustrophobic little drama deals with a very proper English matron who's husband died while her son was still quite small. That son has now grown and is divorced and living with another man.
Seems the son has told mom that he's gay repeatedly but she refuses to hear it and is still constantly thinking of women to set him up with.
This drama seems to have been dated even when it was first made. It's surprising that something that feels this antiquated was made in the same year as My Beautiful Laundrette and Kiss of the Spider Woman.
For a good contrast one might compare this with two other gay related films made the same year Doña Herlinda y su hijo shows us a Mexican woman's take on the same matters and An Early Frost gives us an American perspective.
This film feels 20 years older than any of these.
